The problem is that your travel journal is full of facts. Your story needs to be filled with feelings. For example, instead of saying, “I took the bus from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to get to such-and-such village,” ask yourself what was truly important about that journey. Was it the stifling heat? The surreal conversation with the driver? The distinctive smell of the passing countryside? It’s these details that transform a simple trip into a piece of adventure.

Find the central narrative arc

A good travelogue, even a short one, needs a backbone. This is called the narrative arc. It’s the central question or challenge you overcame. Think about what you learned or what changed within yourself. This is often what distinguishes a run-of-the-mill article from an excellent personal travelogue .

What was your initial goal? To escape the stress of daily life? To find a specific answer? Or perhaps simply to experience the unknown? This starting point is your “initial situation.” The journey itself, with its unexpected events and encounters, is the “conflict” or the “adventure,” and you can find inspiration for your own next travel story . The end is what you learned or how you evolved.

Practical tip: Before you start writing, answer this simple question: “If I had to summarize my trip in one idea or one striking emotion, what would it be?” This idea will be the central theme of your story.

The art of sensory description

Your reader can’t feel the mountain wind or taste the spicy dish you enjoyed. Your job is to give them the tools to do so, mentally. That’s the key to writing immersive travelogues .

For each significant scene, force yourself to use at least three senses. Novice travelers often focus on the visual (what they see). That’s good, but not enough. Broaden your field of perception.

1. Hearing: What do you hear? The distant murmur of prayers? The metallic clatter of an old tram? The oppressive silence of the desert?
2. The sense of smell: The smell of salt and iodine? The heady scent of spices in a market? The smell of rain falling on hot earth?
3. Touch: The roughness of the stones beneath your bare feet? The sudden coolness of the shade? The coarse texture of an old local fabric?

If you’re describing a crowded market, don’t just say, “There were lots of people and lots of colors.” Instead, say, “The crowd gently pushed past me, my shoulder brushing against a vendor’s rough linen, while the sun, filtered through the red tarpaulins, gave a fiery hue to the air heavy with cumin and sweat.” Do you see the difference? The second example takes you directly there, offering a more immersive and memorable experience .

Integrating human encounters

The landscapes are magnificent, but it’s the people you meet who truly give soul to your inspiring travel stories . Encounters are often pivotal moments in the adventure, as they force interaction and a questioning of your own certainties.

When you recount an interaction, avoid turning it into a simple anecdote. Give it weight. What was the context? What was the communication barrier (language, culture)? And above all, what did this person show you that was different from your own life?

Imagine you spent an evening at someone’s home. Instead of saying, “I had a nice dinner and chatted with the family,” focus on a specific detail. Perhaps the way the father told a story, using his hands with an expressiveness you’ve never seen before. Use the dialogue to reveal the characters’ personalities, even if they’re only in a single scene.

Managing doubt and trip failure

Perhaps you experienced a disappointment. A missed train, terrible weather ruining your long-awaited hike, or simply the feeling that the place wasn’t as “magical” as you’d hoped. Know that these moments are the most precious for a good storyteller. The best travel stories always include an element of authenticity, and authenticity comes from vulnerability.

If you don’t have anything extraordinary to say, write about the ordinary, but show how you experienced it. Doubt, loneliness, confusion in the face of a local custom… these moments reveal your humanity. The reader thinks: “Ah, that could happen to me. I’m not the only one who feels lost sometimes.”

If your summit remained hidden in the clouds, tell of the frustration of the climb, the fleeting beauty of the clearings, and the lesson you learned on the way back down: the reward is not always at the summit.

It is important that the handle helps your hand and arm with the right ergonomic support. Most hiking poles come with optimized handles that help you hold properly, but there is a difference in what material they come in. Cork is especially good in hot climates as this material is good at absorbing sweat and moisture. Foam is also sweat-absorbent, and a very soft material that is nice to hold on to. Rubber is ideal for a colder climate, as it insulates the hands from the cold, and is good for relieving shocks.

How do I set up my walking sticks?

It is important that the walking sticks fit your height and therefore it is important to check the length before you buy. When standing upright with the bar in hand, your elbow should be at a 90 degree angle when the end of the bar hits the ground. A good reminder is that if you are taller than 180 cm, you should at least buy a rod that is 130 cm, and preferably longer. If you are under 180 cm, you can adjust most of the rods down to fit you. Once you have found hiking poles that suit your height, you can experiment by adjusting the length along the way in your trip.

There is a big difference in how the bar should be adjusted depending on what terrain you are in. Big Island

I sailed along the palm-clad coast almost 20 years ago when I first visited Brazil, and have since dreamed of going ashore. My 19-year-old I remember it as enchantingly beautiful! So now I hope that the memory – and the many anecdotes I have poured on Martin over the years – live up to reality.

The historic port city will be the next stop on the route. The trip goes by boat and bus along the lush coast, which is also called “Costa Verde” (the green coast). The coastline is known for being Brazil’s most beautiful and surrounds Paraty with scenic surroundings: wooded mountain landscapes, tropical beaches and an idyllic archipelago, where in the old days the pirates hid from the Portuguese.

You do not have to check many travel guides before you discover that Paraty tops all the ‘must-see’ lists in Brazil. In addition to the scenic landscapes, the city houses some of the world’s best-preserved colonial architecture. In pictures, the cobbled and car-free streets look like something from a historical film, where guys like Zorro jump down from red brick roofs, free the population from greedy rich people and charm Latino-delicious beauties.

We strongly doubt whether our stay in Paraty will be as action-packed, but we look forward to experiencing the beautiful city before taking the bus on to:

With over 20 million inhabitants, São Paulo is the largest city in the southern hemisphere. That in itself is a fact that arouses our curiosity. In addition, the colossal concrete jungle is also Marcela’s hometown before she moved to Copenhagen. So we can hardly wish for a better guide when we meet the future couple in the gigabyte.

After an evening in São Paulo, we drive with Marcela and Johan to her parents’ cottage at the town of Piracicaba, approx. 2 hours drive from São Paulo. Here begins the warm-up to the highlight of the whole journey:

Brazilian wedding

We have no doubt that the next four days will be a bubbly, fun and samba dancing experience! For there is one thing that the Brazilians are known for, it is that they are fabulous to party! And that’s exactly what the couple has planned for us.

For the occasion, they have rented a hotel where there is room for the party’s 300 guests (yes, you read that right – three hundred!) Contrary to the Danish wedding party traditions, we are not seated on a multi-course menu and must not pay attention to home-brewed songs and long speeches.

No no, a large buffet with Brazilian delicacies and an open cocktail bar will ensure that the party guests have the energy to keep the dance floor going all night long. We have to go out and shake R…! What’s not to like?

From São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro

For the next 8 days we have no concrete plans. We think we will take a few days in São Paulo with some Danish friends and then travel on to Rio de Janeiro. Then you have good tips for cool places, good hotels, delicious restaurants, beautiful beaches, etc. – then we would love to hear from you!

After a very stressful day in Venice with many people and a lot of noise from motorboats, we did not have high expectations for Burano. However, we had heard from several that it should be really good and less touristy – especially if you are fresh in the morning and take one of the very early boats. So we did.

The alarm clock rang at 06.00, and at 06.56 we were ready by the bus to reach the ferry 08.10 over to Burano from Fondamente Nove. It should turn out to be worth it all.

Where is Burano?

Venice is surrounded by a lot of small islands. One of these is Burano, which is 40 minutes sailing north from perhaps the most visited city in all of Italy. However, it does not feel like 40 minutes when sailing, as the view from the boat is fantastic. Incidentally, it also costs only 7.50 euros per person to take the ferry over there.

On the way to Burano you also pass Murano, which is on many tourists’ to do list when they go to Venice. The reason for this is that this is where many of the glassblowers are located. So if you want genuine Murano glasses to take home from your Italian holiday, you should take a trip to Murano on the way home from Burano.

What is Burano known for?

Unlike Murano, Burano is not known for glassblowing. In return, the island is known for its very beautiful and colorful buildings that can be found everywhere on the small island. Never before have we seen anything like it – and it was exactly colors like these that we had expected we would be greeted by around Italy.

There is not much to do in Burano besides exploring the many small and colorful side streets. It is also abundant in itself as it is a delight to the eye. It’s simply hard to get enough!

If you want to be free of Venice and the many people, you also get the Venice vibe of Burano, as the island is also filled with canals and bridges. There is just far more calm and beautiful!

When is the best time to visit Burano?

We highly recommend going to the island early in the morning. Very much like in a weekday if possible. If not, the first departures are already before sunrise – and every 20 minutes. If you are near Venice in connection with an extended weekend, there is still a good opportunity to experience the island before all other pilgrimages there after breakfast and for lunch.

Summer is obviously much busier than autumn. On the other hand, it is also warmer than what we experienced. Because we had to walk around in thick sweaters despite sunshine, as the temperature only crept up to 16 degrees. In return, we were happy to have the island to ourselves for an entire hour – it was quite magical!

Burano is clearly one of the most beautiful places we have seen in Italy . So do not deceive yourself for the opportunity if you are planning a visit to the area around Venice!

One of London’s most recognizable icons, along with Big Ben, is Tower Bridge . Built in the Victorian style 120 years ago, this suspension and bascule bridge over the River Thames is considered one of the greatest works of engineering. Its two towers are joined at the top and at the bottom it has a drawbridge, which opens about 800 times a year. Large boats or boats with masts over 9 meters can request its opening if they give 24 hours notice. The bridge is freely accessible to vehicles and pedestrians, but if you want to visit its towers and the exhibition inside, you must obtain a ticket.

BIG BEN

If you think of London, one of the first images that comes to mind is surely that of Big Ben , thus calling the great bell housed inside the clock and the tower. In 2012, to celebrate the queen’s jubilee, it was renamed Elizabeth Tower. It is located in the northern part of the Palace of Westminster, it has a height of more than 96 meters and was built in 1858 after the destruction of the palace due to a fire. The clock was designed by Augustus Pugin and each of its four faces measures more than 7 meters in diameter. Unlike most of London’s monuments, foreign visitors do not have access to the interior of Big Ben.

BUCKINGHAM PALACE

Buckingham Palace has been the official residence of the British Royal Family for more than 150 years, although today it functions mainly as an administrative headquarters. This “little palace” in the middle of the city has more than 700 rooms, some of them reception rooms, offices, rooms for palace workers and many others for royalty and guests. In summer, the palace is open to visitors on foot and you can see different rooms such as the coronation room, the great staircase designed by John Nash, or furniture and objects, among others. The rest of the year, one of the most important attractions is the changing of the royal guard, which brings together thousands of people 3 to 4 times a week.

TOWER OF LONDON

THAMES RIVER

The River Thames rises near Kemble and, along its more than 340 km, passes through Oxford, and through the center of London, supplying water to the city. One of the most popular options for seeing London is to choose one of the many companies that offer riverboat rides . There are tourist companies with which to contract a tour or a more “local” option for getting around, such as the London River Services boats, with ferries that take you from one bank of the river to the other side. There is a curious fact, next to the river there is a path for trekking called the Thames Path , almost 300 km long. A kind of “Camino de Santiago” that leads you through small towns and big cities.

ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL

Its impressive white vault is one of the most iconic elements of the City of London. Located on top of a hill, at the highest point of the city, this Anglican cathedral, in its 300 years of history, has seen many events such as royal weddings, celebrations of reigns and funerals of historical figures, as well as a Martin Luther King’s speech in 1964. Inside St. Paul’s Cathedral , we can admire the frescoes from the Whispering Gallery, its vault, its arches, the choir and numerous works of art, which are well worth a visit and the cost of the entry.

PICCADILLY CIRCUS

Built in 1819 to connect Regent Street and Piccadilly, Piccadilly Circus has become one of the most famous squares in central London. Its amalgamation of neon lights and screens with advertisements leave no one indifferent. Different brands have advertised on these screens over the years, including Coca Cola, with one of the longest-running ads. A curious fact is that Yoko Ono paid a large sum of money to maintain the phrase “Imagine all the people living life in peace” by John Lennon, for a few months. In addition to these illuminated signs, we find a statue of the Greek god Anteros, the Criterion Theatre, the London Pavillion and numerous shops.

TRAFALGAR SQUARE

They say that Trafalgar Square in the City of London is the center of democracy and protest. Most weekends you will find demonstrations, something that the local government allows as a matter of tradition. It was created to commemorate the Battle of Trafalgar, in which the armies of several countries tried to overthrow Napoleon off the coast of Cadiz. In its center it has kilometer zero from where all the distances of the United Kingdom are counted, something like our particular Puerta del Sol. The Nelson column, in honor of the victorious admiral, built in 1840 is one of the most visible icons, thanks to its more than 46 meters high.

LEICESTER SQUARE

Leicester Square is a square within the City of Westminster that was built in the 17th century and named after an iconic mansion, Leicester House. Nowadays, it is a very busy place and quite famous for having numerous cinemas and theaters where some of the most important releases of contemporary cinema are seen. In the center of the square, a small garden and a statue of William Shakespeare welcomes us. Its four entrances are dedicated to some of the square’s most famous residents, Isaac Newton among them. In summer, open-air cinema sessions are organized, perfect for a night out in London if the weather is good.

WESTMINSTER ABBEY AND THE PALACE

Westminster Abbey or Westminster Abbey is a Gothic-style Anglican church located in the City of Westminster, right next to the palace of the same name. Built around the 10th century and later rebuilt, today it is a World Heritage Site. As one of the most important religious temples in the country, royal weddings and funerals of monarchs and public figures have been held inside. Some of them, buried here like Isaac Newton, Stephen Hawking, Charles Darwin, Livingstone or Rudyard Kipling.

SOHO

Also in the City of Westminster we find London’s Soho , a multicultural and entertainment area, I would say almost world famous. So much so that the word Soho has been exported to other cities. During the 19th century and part of the 20th, the Soho area concentrated prostitution and sex shops, later filling up with theaters and attracting intellectuals and artists. Nowadays, we find theaters, bars and shops in its streets. Some of its most iconic streets are Carnaby Street, where we will find big brand stores, and Old Compton Street, focused on the gay public.

SHAKESPEARE’S GLOBE

Globe Theater was a theater for which William Shakespeare wrote plays together with his company. It was built in 1599 on the south side of the Thames. A few hundred years later, in 1997, actor Sam Wanamaker, based on extensive research and plans and writings of similar buildings of the time, rebuilt the original theater on the same site and named it Shakespeare’s Globe . During the first period of this new phase, works were carried out only during the day to take advantage of sunlight, emulating the theater of 1599, in which there was no electric light.

CHINATOWN

Close to Leicester Square and Soho, we find Chinatown , a vibrant area with buildings decorated with dragons and other symbols of the Asian country. Initially, before World War II, Chinatown was located in Limehouse due to its proximity to the port and the numerous cargo ships that arrived with Chinese sailors. In the 1970s, businesses began to open in its current location. Taking a walk through its streets we can choose from hundreds of restaurants and shops to enjoy a bit of its flavors, smells and colors.
