We have traveled on a new safari in Africa – this time in South Africa, where we live by the country’s largest and most famous national park. Kruger is the size of half of Denmark and in addition to being home to The Big Five, the park houses Africa’s second largest number of different mammals. The question is just how many of the 147 species are we going to see?
ad news , says one of the lodge’s employees, when we finally arrived after almost a day’s journey from Denmark. Her facial expression is hard to decipher, and my stomach shrinks at the thought that our dream of revisiting The Big Five & Co might evaporate faster than you can say “Hakuna matata”.
”You are going to LOVE South Africa so much, that you have to return again and again. And it is going to cost you a lot of money to travel back and forth! ”. The air hisses out between my teeth in a slightly strange laugh. And that moment I can feel HOW much I have actually been looking forward to going on safari once again .

THE SOUND OF AFRICA
We hear them before we see them. A deep growling sound is followed by a trumpeting trumpet. Soon after, an elephant mother with her little cub appears almost 50 meters away from our balcony. Down from the river we hear a loud splash, where a hippopotamus plumps in the water – not far from a crocodile sunbathing on a large rock. And all the birds in the trees start to call out loud as a herd of baboons takes the stage like a gang of naughty boys ‘strolling’ around the neighborhood looking for some fun in the street.
We stay at Pestana Kruger Lodge , which has a beautiful view of the river “Crocodille River”, which marks the southern entrance to the Kruger National Park in South Africa . Here the animals come down to drink water and turn our balcony into a safari in itself – we do not even have to move a meter. Therefore, in the first hour we have already seen a handful of Africa’s most famous animals.
Rumor has it that the staff has seen all the members of The Big Five in one day. So right now we are sitting spellbound, waiting to see if the elephant will be followed up by the lion, the leopard, the buffalo and the rhino. Maybe we’ll be sitting here for a long time, but what does it do when we have South African white wine in the fridge. Oh, South Africa – you pamper us!
